Choosing a Thermage FLX Clinic in Seoul: What to Check Beyond Cost

Cheongdam RETOO ClinicWritten by Medical Director Dr. Kim Jae-rim

Two clinics can use the same Thermage FLX device and still deliver very different treatments. Medical Director Dr. Kim Jae-rim of Cheongdam RETOO Clinic walks through what a cost sheet won't tell you: cleared equipment, genuine single-use tips, AccuREP energy control, a plan built on skin diagnosis, HeatView thermal monitoring and aftercare.

Why does Thermage FLX differ from clinic to clinic?

Start researching Thermage and you'll notice that clinics using the exact same Thermage FLX device describe the treatment quite differently. That's because cost isn't set by a single device fee. What varies is which tips are used, how many shots go to which areas at what energy level, and whether a pre-treatment assessment and aftercare are included.

Even at 600 shots, covering the whole face with the Total Tip 4.0 cm² and concentrating on the cheeks and jawline are two different treatments. The manufacturer itself says shot count should depend on your skin thickness and your provider's judgment [1]. A retrospective study of more than 600 monopolar radiofrequency treatments found that results and patient satisfaction improved after switching to lower energy with multiple overlapping passes; temporary side effects occurred in 2.7% of treatments, and none were long-lasting [3].

How does Thermage heat the skin?

Thermage FLX is a fourth-generation monopolar radiofrequency (RF) device. Current leaves the tip, passes through your skin and returns to a grounding pad on your body, and the tissue's resistance turns it into heat throughout the dermis along the way. The surface is cooled with every shot while heat reaches deep into the dermis, an approach the manufacturer calls the Reverse Thermal Gradient [1].

Current passing through the dermis creates resistive heat, while the tip cools the epidermis with every shot.

Heated dermal collagen denatures and contracts, and as it's rebuilt, wrinkles improve [1]. AccuREP™ is an algorithm that reads skin impedance (resistance to electrical current) with every shot and adjusts the RF output automatically [2]. But the device fine-tuning energy shot by shot is one thing; your provider deciding how many passes to build on each area is another. A lower-energy, multiple-pass technique has been shown to be an effective approach for firming the lower face [4]. So the question to ask a clinic isn't "How many shots?" but "Which tip, on which areas, and how many passes?"

How can I tell if Thermage tips are genuine?

Thermage FLX is cleared by the US FDA through 510(k) (2017, K170758) and approved by Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) (2018, approval No. 18-245). Its treatment tips are single-use electrodes with their own separate approval (No. 17-4032) [1]. A genuine tip delivers only a set number of shots and locks after use on one patient, so it can't be reused [1][2].

The manufacturer explains how you can check. Before treatment, look for the authenticity sticker and QR label on the unopened tip box. Afterwards, register the number on your authenticity card on the manufacturer's website or app [1]. The manufacturer states that it does not vouch for the efficacy or safety of treatments performed with unauthorized medical devices [1].

Also check which tips your plan includes. The Total Tip 4.0 cm² treats the face, neck and body, while the eye area and eyelids are treated with the Eye Tip 0.25 cm², which heats shallowly and precisely. The Total Tip is never used over the eyes [2]. Cheongdam RETOO Clinic uses only genuine equipment and tips, with the full shot count, and never uses unauthorized devices or drugs.

What should I ask about the assessment and treatment plan?

Genuine equipment is the baseline; the plan comes next. If your cheeks look like they're sagging, the approach depends on whether the skin has lost firmness or lost volume has changed your facial contour. If volume loss is the main issue, tightening the skin alone won't give you the change you want. That's why Cheongdam RETOO Clinic plans every treatment only after its 3D Precision Skin Diagnosis System has imaged your skin under four light sources (standard, gloss, polarized and UV) and mapped about 70 facial landmarks.

At Cheongdam RETOO Clinic, Thermage FLX starts with diagnosis and is fine-tuned with HeatView monitoring.

When a clinic walks you through its plan, you should hear all of the following: which tips will be used, which areas and how much of each, how the shots will be split by area, and the energy level and number of passes. The manufacturer recommends working with your provider to keep the energy around level 2, "a little hot but tolerable" [1].

How is heat monitored during treatment, and what aftercare should I expect?

RF heat is invisible from the outside. Even on one face, the cheeks, jawline and eye area differ in thickness and hydration, so current flows and heat builds differently in each. Too little heat means a weaker result; too much can lead to burns or hollowed cheeks. Clinical results have been published on RF skin tightening combined with a thermal imaging camera to track skin temperature during treatment [5].

HeatView uses a thermal imaging camera to show the temperature across the treatment area in real time.

Cheongdam RETOO Clinic monitors skin temperature in real time with the HeatView™ System, which it developed in-house and patented (Korean Patent No. 10-2538270, a lifting treatment system equipped with a thermal imaging camera module) [6]. The camera's readings are displayed in three temperature bands, so your provider can see at a glance which areas need more heat and which already have enough [6].

Aftercare belongs on your checklist too. Redness usually fades within 24 hours and swelling within a few days [2]. For about a week, the manufacturer advises skipping saunas, Korean bathhouses (jjimjilbang), strenuous workouts, heavy drinking, smoking and peeling products, and keeping up with sunscreen and moisturizer [1]. Results develop over 2–6 months as collagen is rebuilt and last 1–2 years depending on your skin [2], so ask whether the clinic tracks your progress on consistent terms during that time.

Why do Thermage FLX costs vary?

If you're comparing clinics from overseas, knowing what drives the cost helps you compare plans rather than single numbers. The main factors are the ones above: which tips are included (Total Tip, Eye Tip or Body Tip), which areas are treated and how much of each, how many shots go to each area, and whether Thermage FLX is combined with other treatments.

Since the tips, areas and shot split depend on your skin thickness, firmness and what actually needs improving, your final plan, and so your final cost, is explained only after an in-person consultation and assessment. A figure quoted before anyone has seen your skin can't reflect how many shots go where.

Planning Thermage FLX around a stay in Seoul

Even on a short trip, it helps to plan around the recovery timeline above. Redness usually fades within 24 hours and swelling within a few days [2]. For about a week, the manufacturer advises avoiding saunas, jjimjilbang, hard workouts, heavy drinking, smoking and peeling products, and keeping up with sunscreen and moisturizer [1]. If your itinerary includes spa days or long hours in strong sun, keep that week in mind. And since results build over 2–6 months [2], what you see when you leave Seoul isn't the final result.

How long to stay and when to arrange a follow-up are decided at your consultation, based on your treatment plan and how your skin recovers.

Before you visit, photos are a good way to show the areas that bother you and the general direction you have in mind. Skin thickness, firmness and treatment area, however, are decided at your in-person consultation, including the 3D precision skin diagnosis. Please send photos of the areas of concern only, and never photos of ID documents.

Cheongdam RETOO Clinic is in Cheongdam, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the 5th and 6th floors of First Light Tower, 417 Dosan-daero, a 500m walk from Exit 4 of Apgujeongrodeo Station on the Bundang Line.

How does Cheongdam RETOO Clinic approach Thermage FLX?

At Cheongdam RETOO Clinic, the same Thermage FLX is never performed the same way for everyone. Through 3D precision skin diagnosis and a one-on-one consultation with Medical Director Dr. Kim Jae-rim, we identify the areas that need improvement and how much of each, plan your tip, shot count and energy distribution by area, and then treat while watching the heat with HeatView.

Your Thermage clinic checklist

  • FDA- and MFDS-cleared equipment and unopened genuine tips (QR label · authenticity number)
  • Which tips your plan includes (Total Tip · Eye Tip)
  • How your skin is assessed before treatment
  • How many shots go to each area, at what energy level and in how many passes
  • How the clinic checks where heat is building during treatment (HeatView)
  • Whether aftercare guidance and progress tracking are included

When comparing Thermage clinics, look at the cost sheet, but also ask: "How will you assess my skin, which tip will you use to build heat where, and how will you check that heat?"

Frequently asked questions

Can I check for myself that my Thermage tip is genuine?

Yes. Before treatment, check the authenticity sticker and QR label on the unopened tip box. Afterwards, register the number on your authenticity card on the manufacturer's website or app. A genuine tip is single-use and locked to one patient.

What is HeatView used for?

HeatView is a system developed and patented by Cheongdam RETOO Clinic. In lifting treatments including Thermage, it lets your provider deliver energy while watching skin temperature on a thermal imaging camera.

Can I have a consultation first and decide on treatment later?

Yes. If your assessment shows that volume loss is the main issue, a different approach may suit you better than Thermage, so feel free to hear the proposed plan first and decide afterwards.

I'm only in Seoul for a short trip. Is Thermage FLX still an option?

Redness usually fades within 24 hours and swelling within a few days, but for about a week you'll need to avoid saunas, hard workouts, heavy drinking and peeling products. Results build over 2–6 months. Whether your schedule suits the treatment is decided at your consultation, based on your plan and how your skin recovers.
