Thermage FLX 300 vs 600 Shots in Seoul: Tips and Treatment Areas

With Thermage FLX, 300 or 600 shots tells you how many times RF energy is delivered, not how strong the result will be. Cheongdam RETOO Clinic explains how the Total Tip and Eye Tip differ in size and heating depth, why shot count and energy level are separate things, and how treatment areas are planned.

Thermage 300 vs 600 shots: is 600 twice as effective?
If you've researched Thermage, you've probably seen 300-shot and 600-shot options. A shot (REP) is one delivery of radiofrequency energy to a patch of skin the size of the tip. The shot count tells you how much area is covered, and in how many passes. Double the shots doesn't mean double the result.
The manufacturer states that shot count should be set according to your skin thickness and your provider's judgment [1]. Putting 300 shots into one or two areas and spreading 600 across several areas aren't weaker and stronger versions of the same thing; they differ in coverage and in the number of passes. So the real question isn't "which is stronger?" but "which areas are being treated, and how much of each?"
How does Thermage radiofrequency work inside the skin?
Thermage FLX is a fourth-generation monopolar radiofrequency device. Current travels from the tip through your skin to a grounding pad on your body, and the tissue's resistance generates heat throughout the dermis along that path. It's the same principle that makes a light-bulb filament glow: the heat is created where the current flows, not on the surface.
Heat at the surface would burn, so the tip releases a burst of cooling with every shot while heat reaches deep into the dermis. The manufacturer calls this the Reverse Thermal Gradient [1]. Heated dermal collagen denatures and contracts, and over the following weeks fibroblasts produce new collagen as the tissue rebuilds [3]. Tissue studies of RF-treated skin have confirmed both stages: collagen contraction immediately and new collagen formation a few weeks later [4].
AccuREP™ technology reads skin impedance (electrical resistance) with every shot and adjusts the energy automatically [2], because current flows differently depending on skin thickness, hydration and tip contact. But the device fine-tuning energy shot by shot is a separate matter from how many shots go where. That part is planned by your provider.
Total Tip vs Eye Tip: what's the difference?
Thermage FLX tips differ by size and treatment area. The Total Tip 4.0 cm² (pink; called the Purple Tip on our website) treats the whole face, neck and body and comes in 300-, 600- and 900-shot versions. The Total Tip 3.0 cm² (blue) can stand in for the 4.0, but it takes more shots to cover the same area [1][2]. The Eye Tip 0.25 cm² (green) delivers shallow, precise heat to the eye area and eyelids, where skin is thinner than on the rest of the face, and comes in 225- and 450-shot versions. The Body Tip 16.0 cm² (yellow) is for areas like the abdomen, thighs and above the knees [1][2].

A "shot" from one tip isn't the same as a shot from another; each covers a different area and heats to a different depth. The Total Tip is never used over the eyes, and protective eye shields are placed when the eye area is treated [2]. The Total Tip 4.0 is 33% larger than the 3.0, cutting treatment time by about 25%, and a single handpiece can treat you head to toe just by switching tips [2][3].
| Tip | Size | Heating | Areas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total Tip 4.0 | 4.0 cm² | Precise heating at dermal depth | Face · Neck · Body |
| Eye Tip 0.25 | 0.25 cm² | Shallow, precise heating | Eye area · Eyelids |

So before comparing shot counts, check which tips the plan includes. Someone focused on their cheeks and jawline and someone focused on their eyes might be quoted the same number while talking about completely different treatments.
Who is 300 shots for, and who is 600 shots for?
A 300-shot Total Tip plan is usually considered when loss of firmness in one particular area is the main concern. If your cheek skin is loose overall, for example, we identify the core of the problem and concentrate there. There's no rule like "300 shots always means the jawline."
A 600-shot plan delivers more energy passes, but that alone doesn't make it a full-face treatment. If your cheeks, jawline and neck all bother you, several areas are planned together, and the actual coverage depends on how those 600 shots are split. If your eyes are also a concern, an Eye Tip plan is considered separately, and the two tips' shot counts aren't added together for comparison.
- Loss of firmness in one area · Shots concentrated on the core concern
- Several areas such as cheeks, jawline and neck · Check the split per area first
Shot count vs energy level: what's the difference?
Shot count is the number of deliveries. Tip type, energy level and the number of overlapping passes are separate variables. Two treatments with the same number on paper won't necessarily cover the same area or produce the same tissue response.
How the shots are layered matters. In a study of a lower-energy, multiple-pass technique, an average of more than 500 shots per patient was used on the lower face and neck, spread over up to five passes [5]. A high shot count doesn't mean high energy; it means covering the area several times at a gentler setting. Expert consensus recommendations on patient selection and treatment planning for fourth-generation monopolar RF have also been published [6].
The manufacturer recommends working with your provider to keep the energy around level 2, "a little hot but tolerable" [1]. At your consultation, you should hear more than the total shot count: which tips will be used, which areas and how much of each, and the energy level and number of passes for each area.
Why do Thermage treatment plans cost different amounts?
If you're comparing plans before your trip, remember that a shot count alone doesn't tell you much. What makes one plan different from another is the areas treated, the tips involved (a Total Tip alone, or a Total Tip plus a separate Eye Tip plan), the number of shots and how they're split, and whether Thermage is combined with other treatments. Since shot count depends on your skin thickness and your provider's judgment, these can only be set once your skin has been assessed. Your final plan, including cost, is explained after your in-person consultation.
Can I get a shot count from photos before I visit?
If you're planning a trip to Seoul, photos sent in advance can show where your concern is, such as your cheeks, jawline, neck or eyes, and the general direction you have in mind. They can't show skin thickness, remaining firmness or exactly where wrinkles sit, and those are precisely what determine the tips, shot count and split per area. They're confirmed at an in-person consultation using the 3D Precision Skin Diagnosis System described below. Please send photos of the area of concern only, and never photos of your passport or other ID. How long to stay and any follow-up are decided at your consultation, based on your treatment and recovery.
How does Cheongdam RETOO Clinic plan Thermage shots?
Even with the same Thermage FLX device, Cheongdam RETOO Clinic doesn't treat everyone the same way. The 3D Precision Skin Diagnosis System takes images under four light sources and maps about 70 facial landmarks to pinpoint where firmness has dropped and where wrinkles sit. Medical Director Dr. Kim Jae-rim then plans your tips, shot count and energy distribution for each area in a one-on-one consultation.
During treatment, the patented HeatView™ System uses a thermal imaging camera to show in real time where heat is reaching. Even with a fixed shot count, some spots will be under-heated and others over-heated, so the distribution is adjusted as we go. Only genuine tips and devices are used, with the full shot count, and genuine tips are single-use and locked to one patient [1].

If you're comparing Thermage plans, skip "Is 600 shots better?" and ask instead, "How many shots will go to each area I'm concerned about, and which tips are included?"
Frequently asked questions
Is 300 shots of Thermage enough for the full face?
In a plan focused on one area, 300 shots go there. To treat the whole face evenly, the split per area is checked first. Shot count is set by your skin thickness and your provider's judgment.
Can the Total Tip be used around the eyes?
The Total Tip is never used over the eyes. Crow's feet and eyelids are treated with the dedicated Eye Tip 0.25 cm² (225 or 450 shots), designed for skin thinner than the rest of the face.
How long does a Thermage FLX session take?
With the Total Tip 4.0, fourth-generation Thermage FLX takes 30 minutes or less, and 30–60 minutes depending on the tips, shot count and areas. Allow extra time for diagnosis and preparation.
Can I decide my shot count before I arrive in Seoul?
Photos can show where your concern is, but the tips, shot count and split per area depend on your skin thickness and your provider's judgment, so they're decided after an in-person assessment and consultation.
