Cheongdam RETOO ClinicWritten by Medical Director Dr. Kim Jae-rim

Heat-based lifting treatments such as Sofwave, Thermage FLX and Ultherapy Prime leave no surface wounds, and redness fades within hours to days, but new collagen keeps forming for months. Medical Director Dr. Kim Jae-rim of Cheongdam RETOO Clinic covers same-day skincare, what to skip for a week, normal reactions, warning signs and how our aftercare team supports you.

Can I wash my face, wear makeup and shower after a lifting treatment?

Sofwave, Thermage FLX and Ultherapy Prime use ultrasound or radiofrequency to deliver heat beneath the skin, with no incisions. There's no wound on the surface, so you can get back to your day straight away. Sofwave's manufacturer even says no special aftercare is needed and you can put on makeup right after [1]. Still, your skin is busy responding to the heat underneath, so it's wise to keep things gentle on treatment day.

Wash your face lightly with lukewarm water that evening, without scrubbing the treated area. Light makeup is fine the same day, and your normal routine can resume the next morning. Showering is fine too; just don't let hot water run over your face for long. Skin often feels dry afterwards, so moisturize more generously than usual, wear sunscreen when you go out, and give peels and scrubs a week off.

Treatment-day checklist

  • Wash gently with lukewarm water in the evening
  • Don't rub the treated area
  • Light makeup is fine · Normal routine from the next day
  • Avoid hot water and long showers
  • Moisturize and wear sunscreen

What happens in your skin after a lifting treatment?

Aftercare matters because your skin keeps changing long after the treatment ends. In the heated dermis, collagen first denatures and contracts. Then the body's wound-healing response runs through three phases. During inflammation, macrophages and signaling molecules gather. During proliferation, fibroblasts (the cells that make collagen) produce type III collagen. During maturation, type III is replaced by sturdier type I collagen [4]. That's why the lift appears gradually over 2–3 months and keeps developing up to 6 months [4].

Where heat has contracted collagen, fibroblasts build new collagen that is remodeled over several months

In a study that sampled skin at intervals after RF heating, the immediate contraction was followed over several weeks by new collagen and new elastic fibers [5]. A study of focused ultrasound on Korean skin also found more dermal collagen in biopsies taken two months later [6]. In other words, the redness and tightness on day one are a reaction to heat; the changes over the following weeks are new collagen forming as your skin recovers. The first-week precautions are about cutting back on what disrupts that recovery: heat, friction, UV and increased blood flow.

When can I go back to saunas, workouts and drinking?

Every one of Cheongdam RETOO Clinic's treatment-specific aftercare sheets includes the same rule: no alcohol, smoking, strenuous exercise, saunas or Korean bathhouses (jjimjilbang) for one week. Thermage's official Korean guidance says the same, advising against saunas, jjimjilbang, strenuous exercise, heavy drinking, smoking and peeling products for about a week, along with sunscreen and moisturizer [2]. All of these raise body temperature or boost blood flow, which can make redness and swelling linger.

  2. That eveningGentle lukewarm cleanse · Moisturize
  3. Next dayNormal makeup · Keep wearing sunscreen
  4. First weekNo alcohol, smoking, hard workouts, saunas or peeling products
  5. 2–3 monthsChanges show as new collagen forms · Progress check
The restrictions last about a week; the results build over the months that follow

Light walks and everyday activity are fine. Sweaty workouts, long stretches in hot places and nights out drinking can wait until after the first week, once your skin has clearly calmed down. If you still have redness or a warm feeling after a week, hold off a little longer.

How long do redness and swelling last, and when should I call the clinic?

Manufacturers describe similar reactions for all three devices. With Sofwave, redness and swelling fade within a few hours [1]. With Ultherapy Prime, the skin reddens at first and settles within a few hours, with mild swelling, tingling and tenderness to the touch for a short while [3]. With Thermage FLX, you may have temporary swelling, redness, mild tenderness or bruising, most of which settles within a few days [2].

TreatmentReactions listed by the manufacturerWhen they settle
SofwaveRedness · SwellingWithin a few hours
Thermage FLXSwelling · Redness · Mild tenderness · BruisingMostly within a few days
Ultherapy PrimeRedness · Mild swelling · Tingling · TendernessRedness within hours · The rest is temporary
None of the three leaves a surface wound; redness and mild swelling are short-lived

To soothe your skin, rest a cold towel on it lightly. Don't put ice directly on the skin or press hard. Keep your skin hydrated with a repair cream or moisturizer, and don't rub or massage the treated area. More redness or warmth afterwards doesn't mean a stronger result, and less doesn't mean you got less energy.

Know the difference between normal recovery and something that needs checking. If pain keeps getting worse, redness is still spreading a day or two later, or you notice blisters, oozing or a clear change in skin color, don't wait. Contact the clinic. Lingering numbness or tingling, facial movement that feels different with certain expressions, or swelling that's much worse on one side also need to be checked. Take photos before you get in touch; it helps the doctor assess things faster.

When to contact the clinic

  • Pain that keeps getting worse
  • Redness still spreading a day or two later
  • Blisters · Oozing · A clear change in skin color
  • Lingering tingling or numbness
  • Facial movement that feels different with expressions
  • Swelling much worse on one side

How can I make my lifting results last longer?

Lifting results aren't finished on treatment day; they emerge as collagen forms. With Sofwave, some change shows within a week and most of it appears over about 12 weeks [1]. With Ultherapy Prime, the lift builds gradually over 2–3 months and continues up to 6 months [4]. Good aftercare is about helping your skin recover well during that time.

Sun protection and moisturizing are the foundation. Both appear in manufacturer guidance [2], and they're worth keeping up every day, not just after treatment. Good sleep, plenty of fluids and not smoking all support your skin's recovery. Cheongdam RETOO Clinic also suggests pairing lifting with a skin booster, as in Personal Sofwave, to support hydration and firmness together. How long results last depends on your age, skin and lifestyle, so the interval between sessions is set by reviewing your progress.

Aftercare tips for a short trip to Seoul

If you're traveling to Seoul for a lifting treatment, plan around the recovery timeline above. There's no surface wound, and you can go about your day with light makeup. Redness fades within a few hours after Sofwave and Ultherapy Prime, and swelling or bruising after Thermage FLX mostly settles within a few days [1][2][3]. What belongs in your itinerary is the following week: about seven days without alcohol, smoking, hard workouts, saunas, jjimjilbang or peeling products, while keeping up with sunscreen and moisturizer. Plan long days in strong sun or evenings at a bathhouse with that in mind.

The visible change develops over weeks and months, so the face you see when you leave Seoul isn't the final result. How long to stay, and when and how to review your progress, are decided at your consultation, based on your treatment and recovery.

The warning signs above still apply once you're home. If pain gets worse, redness keeps spreading after a day or two, or you notice blisters, oozing, lingering numbness or changes in facial movement, take photos of the treated area and contact the clinic rather than waiting. Photos of the area are all we need; please don't send photos of ID documents.

How does Cheongdam RETOO Clinic handle aftercare?

At Cheongdam RETOO Clinic, aftercare isn't a single handout; it's a process that starts with the plan we make before treatment. When your skin is recorded with the 3D Precision Skin Diagnosis System beforehand, your progress can be compared on the same terms later, and data from every scan is stored to track and analyze changes.

During treatment, we monitor skin temperature on a thermal imaging camera using our patented HeatView System, to prevent the burns or hollowed cheeks that excess heat can cause. Fewer reactions afterwards make recovery easier, so in a sense, aftercare starts during the treatment itself.

Once your treatment is done, a dedicated one-on-one team takes over. Your coordinator guides you through every step before and after treatment, the aftercare team focuses on a smooth recovery and keeping your skin in good condition, and a home-care prescription spells out what to do at home. If you're considering a lifting treatment, talk through not just the result you're hoping for but also how you'll spend the first few days afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a sheet mask after a lifting treatment?

A gentle, low-irritation hydrating mask is fine. Don't rub the treated area, and skip products with brightening or exfoliating ingredients for a week.

When can I have other skin treatments after lifting?

Thermage's manufacturer doesn't recommend same-day treatment when the skin is very red, such as right after a laser treatment. Other heat-based treatments should wait until your skin has calmed down, and the order is decided at your consultation.

I have a bruise after my treatment. Is that normal?

Thermage's manufacturer lists mild bruising as a reaction that settles within a few days. If the bruise gets bigger or the pain becomes severe, contact the clinic to have it checked.

I'm only in Seoul for a short stay. What matters most for aftercare?

On treatment day, cleanse gently, moisturize and wear sunscreen. For about a week, avoid alcohol, smoking, hard workouts, saunas and peeling products. Results develop over 2–3 months, so how long to stay and how to review your progress are decided at your consultation, based on your treatment and recovery.
