Why do Thermage results last 1–2 years?

Thermage FLX is a fourth-generation monopolar radiofrequency device ^[3]. A rapidly alternating current runs between the tip on your skin and a grounding pad on your body, and as it meets resistance in the tissue, it turns into heat. The device relies on what the manufacturer calls a Reverse Thermal Gradient: a cooling system protects the surface while heat reaches deep into the dermis ^[1].

Heated dermal collagen denatures and the skin contracts, along with the fibrous septae that run through the fat layer ^[3]. As that collagen is rebuilt, wrinkles improve ^[3]. The manufacturer gives a range of 1–2 years because duration depends on your skin and how you age ^[2]. How much collagen you start with, whether your skin is thin or thick, and how quickly you age afterwards all shape how long the result seems to last. You may have temporary swelling, redness, mild tenderness or bruising, and most of it settles within a few days ^[1]. For about a week, skip saunas, Korean bathhouses (jjimjilbang), strenuous workouts, heavy drinking, smoking and peeling products, and keep up with sunscreen and moisturizer ^[1]. After that, everyday sun protection and moisturizing are all the maintenance you need.
