Getting Non-Surgical Anti-Aging in Seoul: How to Combine Treatments

Cheongdam RETOO ClinicWritten by Medical Director Dr. Kim Jae-rim

Facial aging combines sagging in the SMAS, lost firmness in the dermis, volume loss, and changes in texture and hydration, so non-surgical anti-aging means combining lifting devices, collagen-stimulating volume injections and skin boosters layer by layer. Medical Director Dr. Kim Jae-rim of Cheongdam RETOO Clinic explains what each of the clinic's combination programs (Ultherti, Softhera, Tita Tune, Volume Tune, Personal Sofwave) does, how to tell which suits you, and how to schedule them.

What does non-surgical anti-aging in Korea actually involve?

Non-surgical anti-aging isn't about one big treatment. It's about breaking down the changes in your face layer by layer and combining the treatment that fits each one. Lifting devices handle the layers that have sagged, collagen-stimulating injections handle lost volume, and skin boosters handle skin that has grown thinner and drier.

Cheongdam RETOO Clinic bundles combinations that are often needed together into programs. Ultherti builds on Ultherapy Prime and Thermage FLX and adds Titanium; Softhera combines Sofwave and Ultherapy Prime; Tita Tune layers Titanium Lifting with TuneFace; Volume Tune brings TuneFace and Juvelook Volume into one plan; and Personal Sofwave adds skin boosters to Sofwave. The names may sound like packages, but each is really a plan in which the energy and products for each layer are set according to your diagnosis.

Why can't one treatment fix facial aging?

"I look saggy" covers several different changes. Drooping cheeks, a softened jawline and deep cheek fat reflect the descent of the SMAS (the layer that supports the skin) and the retaining ligaments. Loose skin, pores and texture reflect changes in the dermis. Add areas that have lost volume, such as the front of the cheeks, under the eyes and the temples, and tightening the skin alone won't bring back the look you want.

A classic example is a "peanut-shaped" face, where the cheekbones remain prominent but the cheeks below have hollowed. The more lifting tightens the skin, the more that hollowing can stand out, so for faces like this, "firmness" and "volume" are separated into areas to lift and areas to fill. On the other hand, a face with enough skin thickness and volume, where only the contour has dropped, may need nothing more than a single lifting device. Combining treatments isn't about having more; it's about filling the gaps.

How do combinations of two lifting devices differ?

Try to handle both sagging and firmness with one lifting device, and one side often falls short. So devices that create heat at different depths and in different shapes are layered to cover each other's gaps.

Ultherti layers Ultherapy Prime, which concentrates heat at single points in the SMAS, with Thermage FLX, which heats the dermis across a broad surface, and adds Titanium for immediate lifting and brightening. Ultherapy Prime lifts gradually over 2–3 months, with change continuing for up to 6 months and results on the face lasting a year or longer [2]. Thermage FLX takes 30–60 minutes depending on the area, with change appearing over 2–6 months and lasting 1–2 years [3]. It's the first option to consider if drooping cheeks and jawline, a full double chin and deep cheek fat are your concern and you'd also like to address firmness and texture.

Softhera divides two ultrasound devices by depth. Sofwave handles the dermis at 1.5 mm, while Ultherapy Prime handles the deeper layers at 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm, with Sofwave taking the place of Ultherapy Prime's 1.5 mm transducer. Sofwave's heat doesn't reach subcutaneous fat, which begins at about 3 mm [1], so Softhera is the first option for people with lean faces or thin skin, those who have experienced or worry about hollowing after lifting, and those who also want to treat lines around the eyes and mouth or on the neck.

Tita Tune layers two devices from Alma in Israel on the same day: the three-wavelength (755, 810 and 1064 nm) laser of Soprano Titanium and the 40.68 MHz radiofrequency of Accent Prime TuneFace. The laser creates heat at depths set by where each wavelength is absorbed, while TuneFace rotates water molecules to create broad, even heat that stimulates new collagen, with a choice of three depths: shallow, medium and deep [5]. It's the first option to consider if you want to address firmness and skin tone together and need to get straight back to your day after treatment.

Which combinations address both lifting and volume?

For a face that has lost volume, treatments that lift and treatments that fill are planned together. Volume Tune combines TuneFace's radiofrequency heat to stimulate collagen across the skin with Juvelook Volume to induce collagen in hollowed areas; Cheongdam RETOO Clinic calls these two pathways "double collagen regeneration."

The two build collagen in different ways. TuneFace's 40.68 MHz radiofrequency rotates water molecules, and the resulting dielectric heating creates deep, even heat that promotes new collagen; a facial treatment takes 30 minutes [5]. In Juvelook Volume, porous spherical microparticles of PDLLA (poly-D,L-lactic acid) react with surrounding cells to drive collagen production, while the non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid it contains acts as a carrier for the particles and provides the physical effect right after injection [6]. Over time, the PDLLA breaks down and leaves the body, and collagen remains in its place [6].

As another option for reinforcing hollowed areas or the support structure of thinned skin, Cheongdam RETOO Clinic also offers Re2o and Juveacell, based on human-derived acellular dermal matrix (hADM). These materials preserve collagen and extracellular matrix (ECM) in the same structure as the dermis to replenish the skin's inner support. Re2o is used for overall skin condition, and Juveacell, with concentration-specific planning, for areas that need different strengths, such as the thin skin around the eyes.

Where do skin boosters fit in?

If lifting and volume shape the face, skin boosters work on hydration, firmness and texture. Personal Sofwave is a program that complements lifting by adding skin boosters to Sofwave, which works on the dermis at 1.5 mm; Cheongdam RETOO Clinic suggests boosters such as Regevan, LiliedM, VITARAN, LIZNE and Fillroad alongside it.

If skin quality itself is your concern, without lifting, look at RETOO Booster. Sensitive, inflamed skin; thin, dry skin; skin with lost firmness and many fine lines; and oily skin troubled by pores and acne marks each call for a different booster, so the choice among Rejuran, exosomes, Jalupro, Juvelook, Collagen Shower and Max Stem Cell (an autologous growth-factor treatment) follows your skin's current priority. For delicate areas like around the eyes, or when tiny amounts need to be spread evenly across the whole face, the needle-free injector Mirajet is sometimes used.

How do I know which combination is right for me?

The criteria for choosing come down to five questions. First, is the sagging a change in facial contour starting in the SMAS, or looseness in the dermis? Second, are there areas lacking volume, and where? Third, how thick is your skin and how much facial fat do you have, and are there areas where deep heat should be avoided? Fourth, how much discomfort are you comfortable with, and how much recovery time can you spare? Fifth, can treatments that need several sessions fit into your schedule?

Which program to consider first for each combination of concerns (the final plan is made after diagnosis)

Sometimes a combination isn't the answer. If lost volume in the front of the cheeks is the main issue, volume restoration comes before lifting. A double chin with distinct fat under the jaw calls for RETUNE FIT FACE, which targets fat, first. And wrinkles caused by facial muscle movement aren't something ultrasound lifting addresses. If you have one clear concern, a single treatment is the right fit, and adding more doesn't make results better. A combination only makes sense when the overlapping areas, the order and the intervals are planned too.

How do pain and recovery differ with combination treatments?

Combination treatments involve several devices and injections, so it's worth knowing how each component affects you afterwards. None of the lifting devices leaves a visible wound, so you go back to your day the same day, but the sensation during treatment and the reaction afterwards vary with the depth of the heat.

With Sofwave, you feel warmth during treatment, and redness and swelling fade within a few hours [1]. With Ultherapy Prime, there's a sensation of heat and prickling, and the common reactions in clinical trials were redness, swelling, pain and temporary nerve-related reactions [2]. With Thermage FLX, a brief feeling of heat is followed by cooling each time the tip touches the skin; temporary redness usually settles within 24 hours, and swelling, mild pain or bruising within a few days [3]. With Titanium, you can wash your face and wear makeup right after [4]. TuneFace reduces discomfort with gradual heating and a cooling system, and you can return to daily life immediately [5].

With Juvelook Volume, redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising at the injection sites are temporary; for a week afterwards, avoid smoking and drinking and skip intense exercise and saunas [6]. If you're concerned about discomfort, your consultation is where you'll choose an approach suited to your combination and treatment area, such as numbing cream, dual anesthesia with SonoStyler added, or MATRX nitrous oxide sedation. How much a treatment hurts isn't a measure of how well it works, so speaking up in advance helps the plan more than gritting your teeth.

How should I schedule combination treatments?

Most lifting devices are one-session treatments as standard, while laser lifting and volume injections are done as a series. Sofwave takes 30–45 minutes for the full face, with one session as standard [1], and one session is also standard for Ultherapy Prime and Thermage FLX [2][3]. Titanium, by contrast, is recommended by Alma Lasers Korea as three sessions 3–4 weeks apart [4], and the manufacturer of Juvelook Volume recommends three sessions about 8 weeks apart as standard [6].

  1. Treatment dayLifting devices: 1 session standard · face washing and makeup OK same day after Titanium
  2. First weekAvoid smoking · drinking · saunas · intense exercise
  3. Every 3–4 weeksTitanium sessions 2 · 3 (3 sessions recommended by Alma Lasers Korea)
  4. About every 8 weeksJuvelook Volume sessions 2 · 3 (3 sessions recommended by the manufacturer)
  5. 2–6 monthsUltherapy Prime · Thermage FLX changes continue · Sofwave over 12 weeks
Each treatment in a combination has its own number of sessions and timing of results (based on official manufacturer information)

Results also develop at different speeds. With Sofwave, some change starts to show within a week, builds over 12 weeks and lasts up to 12 months [1]; with Ultherapy Prime and Thermage FLX, change continues over 2–3 months and 2–6 months respectively [2][3]. With Juvelook Volume, the hyaluronic acid carrier provides the volume right after injection, while the lasting volume fills in over time as collagen builds up [6]. So the results of a combination have to be viewed together over months, not on the day of treatment.

If you're visiting from abroad for a short stay, these differences are your schedule. First decide whether to focus on lifting devices you can complete within one visit, or to continue a series, such as Titanium or volume injections, into your next visit. Because saunas, heavy drinking and intense exercise should be avoided in the first week after treatment, it's better to put those activities early in your trip. How many days you stay and when you come back next are decided together at your consultation, based on your combination and how your skin responds.

How does Cheongdam RETOO Clinic plan combination treatments?

At Cheongdam RETOO Clinic, planning a combination starts with the 3D precision skin diagnosis. Imaging under four light sources (standard, gloss, polarized and UV light) and measurement of about 70 facial landmarks analyze wrinkles, firmness, and facial length, depth and proportion to separate areas that need lifting from areas that need volume. Medical Director Dr. Kim Jae-rim then sets each device's depth and shot distribution, the injection sites, and the areas to leave out in a one-on-one consultation.

How Cheongdam RETOO Clinic plans a combination treatment

During treatment, the clinic's own patented HeatView™ system uses a thermal imaging camera to show skin temperature in real time. The more a combination overlaps heat from two devices on the same area, the more it matters to see where heat builds up. In combinations that include Ultherapy Prime, the subcutaneous structure of each area is checked again with a portable ultrasound, and the 4.5 mm transducer is left out or the area narrowed where there's little fat. Devices, tips and products are used genuine and in full doses only.

The clinic is in Cheongdam, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the 5th and 6th floors of First Light Tower, 417 Dosan-daero, a 500 m walk from Exit 4 of Apgujeongrodeo Station on the Bundang Line. If you're considering a combination treatment, look past the program names. At your consultation, first work out where on your face you want to lift, where you want to fill, which aspects of skin quality you want to improve, and how much to do on this visit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a full combination treatment in one visit to Seoul?

Lifting devices are one-session treatments as standard, so they're often completed within a single visit [1][2][3]. However, Titanium is recommended as three sessions 3–4 weeks apart [4] and Juvelook Volume as three sessions about 8 weeks apart [6], so what to do this visit and what to continue next time are decided together after diagnosis.

Do combination treatments work better than a single treatment?

Having more doesn't mean better results. Treatments are combined to fill each other's gaps when two or more of sagging, firmness and volume are present; if you have one clear concern, a single treatment is the right fit.

Will I see results from volume injections right away?

With Juvelook Volume, the hyaluronic acid carrier provides the volume right after injection, while the lasting volume fills in over time as collagen builds up around the PDLLA particles [6]. The manufacturer recommends three sessions about 8 weeks apart as standard [6].

Can you tell which combination suits me from photos?

Photos are enough to talk about your areas of concern and a general direction, but skin thickness, fat volume and where volume is lacking need to be checked through the 3D precision skin diagnosis and your consultation with the Medical Director after you arrive. Send photos of your areas of concern only, and please don't send photos of your ID.

Can I have combination treatments if I've had fillers or other treatments before?

The plan depends on where and when your previous treatments were done, so share your treatment history at your consultation and the medical team will assess whether treatment is suitable and in what order.
