Getting Treatments on a Seoul Beauty Trip: Recovery Time by Treatment

When you get skin treatments in Seoul, lay four things over your travel dates: how long redness takes to settle, how long to avoid saunas and alcohol, how far apart a series needs to be, and when results appear. Medical Director Dr. Kim Jae-rim of Cheongdam RETOO Clinic sets out the recovery facts for Thermage FLX, Ultherapy Prime, Sofwave, ONDA, Titanium, Potenza, BBL, pico lasers, OPUS, Juvelook Volume and EmFace, and how to sequence treatments on a short trip.

How do I plan a Seoul trip around skin treatments?
There are four things to look at: how long redness and swelling take to settle, how long to avoid activities like saunas and drinking, how far apart sessions in a series need to be, and when results start to show. All four vary by treatment, so laying them over your dates in Seoul makes it clear what to have, and when.
Take redness alone. With Potenza it usually settles within 2–4 hours [8], and with Thermage FLX within 24 hours [1]. Yet after Thermage FLX, the advice to skip saunas and jjimjilbang (Korean bathhouses) lasts about a week [2]. Redness fading fast doesn't shorten the precaution period. This guide doesn't set how many days you should stay in Seoul or when to fly. Those depend on the treatment and how your skin responds, so they're decided at your consultation, based on the treatment and your recovery.
How long does each treatment take?
Whether a treatment takes a whole day of your trip or just half of one starts with the treatment time. Thermage FLX itself takes around 30 minutes, with diagnosis and numbing-cream prep on top [14]. ONDA takes under 10 minutes per area [6], EmFace 20 minutes per session [12], BBL HERO about 30 minutes for a full face [9], and PicoWay Resolve 15–20 minutes [10]. Potenza takes about an hour from applying numbing cream to post-treatment care [8].
Add time for diagnosis and consultation. At Cheongdam RETOO Clinic, every treatment is preceded by a 3D precision skin diagnosis and a one-on-one consultation with the Medical Director, and numbing cream is applied depending on the treatment. If you're sensitive to pain or the treatment area is large, local anesthesia, nitrous oxide sedation or sleep sedation can be chosen or combined in addition to numbing cream. If you have sedation, you shouldn't drive that day, and you'll be told in advance about preparations such as fasting. If you're getting around in a rental car, build that into your plans.
How long is recovery after Thermage, Ultherapy and other heat-based lifting?
Lifting that creates heat beneath the skin with ultrasound, radiofrequency, microwaves or lasers involves no incision and leaves no visible wound, so most people go back to their day right after treatment. The differences lie in how long redness and swelling linger and how long certain activities should be avoided.
After Thermage FLX, redness settles within 24 hours and mild swelling within a few days [1]. The manufacturer's official Korean guidance advises avoiding saunas, jjimjilbang, strenuous exercise, heavy drinking, smoking and peeling products for about a week, and keeping up with sun protection and moisturizing [2]. With Ultherapy Prime, the skin may flush at first and settle within a few hours, while mild swelling, tingling and tenderness to the touch can linger temporarily [3]. With Sofwave, redness and swelling fade within a few hours, and you can wear makeup right away [5].
ONDA has almost no downtime, so you go back to your day the same day [6]. With Hyper Titanium, you can wash your face and wear makeup immediately, and redness mostly settles quickly [7]. After Sofwave or Ultherapy Prime, Cheongdam RETOO Clinic advises avoiding anything that adds heat or pressure to the skin, such as saunas, hot compresses and deep massage, for a few days. After ONDA, the clinic advises avoiding alcohol, smoking, saunas, jjimjilbang and peeling or scrub products for a week.
| Treatment | After treatment | What to avoid | When changes show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thermage FLX | Redness within 24 hours · mild swelling within a few days | About a week: saunas · jjimjilbang · strenuous exercise · heavy drinking · smoking | Over 2–6 months |
| Ultherapy Prime | Redness for a few hours · mild swelling · temporary tenderness | A few days: saunas · deep massage | Over 2–3 months · up to 6 months |
| Sofwave | Redness · swelling for a few hours · makeup right away | A few days: saunas · hot compresses | Some within 1 week · most over about 12 weeks |
| ONDA | Almost no downtime · back to your day | A week: alcohol · smoking · saunas · peeling products | Over several weeks |
| Hyper Titanium | Face washing · makeup right after · brief redness | Irritating activities right after | Over several weeks · 3 sessions 3–4 weeks apart recommended |
Even when the surface settles quickly, the precaution period matters because changes inside the skin keep going after treatment. Heated dermis goes through an inflammatory phase, a proliferative phase in which fibroblasts make new collagen, and a maturation phase in which that collagen firms up [4]. So strong redness or warmth right after treatment doesn't mean a stronger result, and mild reactions don't mean less energy went in. Recovery time is something to plan your trip around, not a way to gauge results.
What's the downtime for Potenza, BBL, pico lasers, OPUS and injectables?
Skin treatments that use needles, light or injections recover a little differently. With Potenza, redness usually settles within 2–4 hours, and you'll be advised to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water afterwards [8].
After BBL HERO, skin can feel warm for 30–60 minutes, pigmented spots temporarily darken before flaking away, and some redness and mild swelling linger briefly, but you can wear makeup and go about your day right after treatment [9]. After PicoWay Resolve, mild redness lasts 8–36 hours [10]. With both, don't pick at darkened pigment, and always wear sunscreen.
OPUS Detox downtime depends on intensity; a strong treatment means 4–5 days [15]. With the same device, recovery can vary a lot depending on how the intensity is set, so if your trip is short, raise this first at your consultation. With Juvelook Volume, redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising at the injection sites are temporary; for a week afterwards, smoking and drinking are off-limits, and saunas and intense exercise should be avoided [11].
| Treatment | After treatment | What to remember | Interval · sessions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Potenza | Redness usually within 2–4 hours | Sunscreen · drink plenty of water | Set at consultation based on your skin |
| BBL HERO | Warm feeling for 30–60 min · pigment darkens briefly, then flakes | Sunscreen · don't pick at pigment | Next session adjusted after the first |
| PicoWay Resolve | Mild redness for 8–36 hours | Sunscreen · don't pick at pigment | Tattoo removal: 4–10 sessions, 6–8 weeks apart |
| OPUS Detox | Varies with intensity · 4–5 days of downtime for a strong treatment | Set intensity and schedule together at consultation | Intensity · sessions set at consultation |
| Juvelook Volume | Temporary redness · swelling · tenderness · bruising | A week: no smoking or drinking · avoid saunas and intense exercise | 3 sessions about 8 weeks apart as standard |
How do I fit a treatment series into a short visit?
Treatments repeated at intervals, rather than done once, are the ones that clash most with a limited stay. For EmFace, the manufacturer's standard protocol is four 20-minute sessions, usually a week apart, and since there are no needles or incisions you go straight back to your day [12]. The launch press release gives 2–14 days as the acceptable interval range [13]. Cheongdam RETOO Clinic sets the interval within this range based on your response to the first session and your schedule.
Manufacturer guidance is three sessions 3–4 weeks apart for Hyper Titanium [7], three sessions about 8 weeks apart for Juvelook Volume [11], and 4–10 sessions 6–8 weeks apart for PicoWay tattoo removal [10]. These intervals reflect how long it takes for collagen regeneration or pigment clearance from the previous session to show, so they aren't shortened to fit your stay in Seoul.
So for treatments with short intervals, your consultation looks at how many sessions fit within your stay; for treatments spaced weeks apart, it looks at how this visit's first session connects to your next visit. The next session is planned at a consultation after the results of the first can be seen.
What should I avoid while traveling after treatment, and for how long?
Cheongdam RETOO Clinic's treatment-specific instructions share a common rule: avoid alcohol, smoking, strenuous exercise, saunas and jjimjilbang for a week. All of these raise body temperature or increase blood flow, which can make redness and swelling last longer. If your itinerary includes a jjimjilbang visit or a late night out drinking, it makes sense to move it to after the first week.
- Treatment dayGentle wash with lukewarm water in the evening · moisturize · light makeup OK
- Next dayUsual makeup · sunscreen when you go out
- One weekAvoid alcohol · smoking · strenuous exercise · saunas · jjimjilbang · peeling products
- Weeks to monthsChanges emerge as collagen forms · check progress after you're home
There are things to keep in mind at your hotel, too. Showering is fine, but don't let hot water run on your face for long, and don't rub or massage the treated area hard. Skin gets drier after treatment, so moisturize more thoroughly than usual. Gentle moisturizing masks are fine, but take a week off brightening or exfoliating products, peels and scrubs. If warmth lingers, cool the area by lightly resting a cold towel on it; don't apply ice directly or press hard.
Light walks and everyday activity are fine. Resume exercise that makes you sweat heavily, and long stretches in hot places, after a week, once you've confirmed your skin has settled; if redness or warmth is still there after a week, wait a little longer. On days you spend outdoors sightseeing, apply sunscreen and remember to reapply.
How should I order treatments on a short trip?
Diagnosis comes first. The 3D precision skin diagnosis is done with makeup removed, so plan for your visit day to begin with it. Based on the results, you'll decide with the Medical Director in a one-on-one consultation what to do first.
Whether you can have several treatments on the same day depends on which layers they target and whether their heat overlaps. Different heat stimuli layered on the same area put a burden on the skin, so the interval is set separately after looking at which tissue each treatment targets. Thermage's manufacturer also advises against same-day treatment when there's severe redness, such as right after a laser treatment [2]. On the other hand, combining two devices that work at different depths on the same day, such as Ultherapy Prime and Thermage FLX (Ultherti), is one of Cheongdam RETOO Clinic's options. If you have both added fat and sagging, the order is to reduce fat first and then lift the remaining sagging, with the two spaced apart.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is done the same day, right after treatment, when the goal is to calm skin after laser lifting or skin boosters. Pressurization and depressurization time is added to the 60 minutes of breathing oxygen. If your ears feel blocked during pressurization, equalize by swallowing, yawning or using the Valsalva maneuver. A bad head cold makes equalizing difficult, so mention it in advance, and items that could cause a fire or static, such as phones and batteries, can't be taken into the chamber.
Schedule your treatment date with some breathing room within your stay. If you can see the redness or swelling settle while you're still in Seoul, you can be seen right away if anything unexpected comes up.
Check these at your consultation before

- How long redness and swelling take to settle for your treatment
- Whether activities to avoid for a week overlap with your travel plans
- For a series: the interval and the next session
- Which treatments to do on the same day and which to split up
- Extra time sedation or Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy adds to the day
When will I see results, and what should I check after I get home?
With heat-based lifting and collagen treatments, most of the change appears after you've flown home. With Sofwave, some change shows within a week and most appears over about 12 weeks [5]; Cheongdam RETOO Clinic records progress at 1, 4, 12 and 16 weeks. Ultherapy Prime lifts gradually over 2–3 months, with improvement continuing up to 6 months [4]. Thermage FLX changes continue over 2–6 months as collagen regenerates [1], and EmFace shows optimal results 6–12 weeks after the final session [12]. That's why you shouldn't judge results by how you look the day after.
Taking photos before you travel, in the same lighting and angle and with a similar expression, makes it easier to compare your progress once you're home. Some symptoms, though, shouldn't be written off as part of recovery: pain that gets steadily worse, redness still spreading a day or two later, blisters, oozing or a marked change in skin color, persistent numbness or dull sensation, a change in how your face moves when you make expressions, or swelling that's noticeably worse on one side. If you notice any of these, don't wait. Take photos and get in touch through the consultation options below this page.
How does Cheongdam RETOO Clinic match treatments to your Seoul itinerary?
Even on a short visit, Cheongdam RETOO Clinic looks at the cause of your concern before the treatment name. The 3D precision skin diagnosis records your skin through imaging under four light sources and measurement of about 70 facial landmarks, and the Medical Director plans the device, energy distribution and sequence within your stay in a one-on-one consultation. During treatment, the patented HeatView system lets the provider watch the heat reaching your skin, guarding against burns or hollowing from excess heat. The fewer reactions after treatment, the less your travel plans get thrown off.
After treatment, a home-care prescription sets out what to do at your hotel, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is scheduled straight after for some treatments. When splitting treatments across visits makes more sense than doing everything at once, you'll be told so. If you're planning a visit to Seoul, include your arrival and departure dates in your consultation message along with the treatments you're interested in. The treatment and recovery schedule is then planned around those dates at your consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I go sightseeing the day after treatment?
Most heat-based lifting leaves no visible wound, so you go back to your day right after, and light walks are fine. If you'll be outdoors for a long time, wear sunscreen, and avoid saunas, jjimjilbang, alcohol and strenuous exercise for about a week.
When can I fly after treatment?
Your flight date and how long you stay in Seoul depend on the treatment and how your skin responds, so they're decided at your consultation. Include your departure date in your consultation message, and the treatment and its order will be planned around it.
Is it a one-visit treatment?
It depends on the treatment. The manufacturer standard is four sessions a week apart for EmFace [12], three sessions 3–4 weeks apart for Hyper Titanium [7], and three sessions about 8 weeks apart for Juvelook Volume [11]. The next session is planned at a consultation after the results of the first can be seen.
How soon after treatment can I go to a jjimjilbang?
Both Thermage FLX's manufacturer guidance and Cheongdam RETOO Clinic's treatment-specific instructions say to avoid saunas and jjimjilbang for about a week [2]. If redness or warmth is still there after a week, wait a little longer.
Can I have several treatments in one day?
Some combinations use devices at different depths on the same day, such as Ultherapy Prime with Thermage FLX, but if heat stimuli would overlap on the same area or there's severe redness, treatments are spaced apart [2]. The order and interval are decided at your consultation after diagnosis.
